Hosting guests can be a fun and rewarding experience, whether you’re throwing a dinner party, hosting a BBQ, or celebrating a special occasion. The art of hosting and key to a successful occasion lies in thoughtful planning, attention to detail, and creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. This most recent time I hosted, I decided last minute (day of, and only a couple of hours to spare), so I didn’t have much time to spend preparing, but it all worked out just fine!
9 strategies that I know will help you successfully master the art of hosting:
- Plan Ahead: A last-minute decision to have people over, doesn’t work for everyone. This time it worked well, because there were only going to be 5 of us, and we were grilling, so it was naturally more casual. But, if you are planning something with more people, and maybe more formal- Start by planning well in advance to ensure everything runs smoothly. Create a guest list, decide on a theme or menu, and make a timeline (THIS ONE IS KEY TO LESS OR NO STRESS DAY OF) for preparations.
- Clean Your Home & Set the Mood: Whether you have someone who will clean your home or you will do it yourself, make sure this is done. I’ve realized that people are naturally curious, and like to wander around, so be sure all areas of your home are clean and presentable.
- Next, Set the mood: You are in control of creating the overall mood as the host. Use a variety of lighting, music, and decor to achieve the ambiance you want to create. I always set a timer for the day of for when I want to turn on my lighting, and music, and light my candles. I prefer to light my candles with enough time for them to burn before my guests arrive, it’s the small details that sometimes make the biggest difference! *SIDE NOTE: I use the Caseta Lutron system, that connects with my Sonos sound system, where I have a pre-saved “Entertaining” scene, and with a hit of a button, my lights and music are set! (This smart home system I have is an easy DIY setup and is relatively inexpensive. I will write a more in-depth post all about the products and ease of setup). I also always have fresh flower arrangements around, and guests are always complimenting me on this small and easy-added touch. They are visually appealing and add a fresh smell to the atmosphere.
- Personalize the Experience: Tailor the event to your guests’ preferences and interests to make them feel special and appreciated. This can apply to a variety of areas, like your guest’s dietary restrictions, favorite foods, cocktails & mocktails, or any special accommodations they may need!
- Prepare a Signature Drink or Dish: Impress your guests with a signature cocktail or dish that reflects your personality and style. I always like to make a charcuterie board, with everything from meats, cheeses, veggies, dips, and sometimes a sweet! This board can vary depending on the event and guests preferences or needs. Get creative with the ingredients and the presentation. Pinterest has great ideas!!
- Offer a Variety of Food and Drink Options: Cater to different tastes and dietary preferences by offering a diverse selection of food and drink options. Include vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options, as well as non-alcoholic beverages for guests who prefer not to drink.
- Delegate Tasks: Don’t be afraid to enlist the help of friends or family members to assist with preparations and hosting duties. Delegate tasks such as setting the table, greeting guests, and serving food to ensure everything runs smoothly.
- Be a Gracious Host: Make your guests feel welcome and comfortable by greeting them warmly, introducing them to other guests, and engaging in conversation. Be attentive to their needs and offer assistance or refreshments as needed, it goes a long way!!
- Focus on Quality Over Quantity: When it comes to entertaining, I find it’s better to focus on quality over quantity. Pay attention to the little details that make a big difference, such as using high-quality ingredients, the choice of serving dishes, glassware, and napkins, and providing thoughtful touches like personalized place cards or party favors. The are endless opportunities to impress your guests!
- Enjoy the Moment: Lastly, don’t forget to relax and enjoy the moment! Hosting can be stressful, but it’s also a wonderful opportunity to connect with friends and loved ones and create lasting memories together.
With these tips and tricks in mind, you’ll be well-equipped to host your next unforgettable gathering for any occasion. Whether you’re hosting an intimate dinner party or a lavish celebration, the art of hosting is all about creating a memorable experience for your guests and making them feel cherished and valued. Cheers to being the ultimate hostess!
